Winslow - La Posada 2020
In Feb 2020, Rena and I did a short van trip in Eastern Arizona and New Mexico on the way to Big Bend National Park in Texas. We spent some time doing things around the town of Winslow which some would say is in “The Middle of Nowhere.” We visited the Rock Art Ranch southeast of Winslow, Winslow Crater about 20 miles west, and walked around downtown Winslow enjoying “Standin’ on the Corner.” We spent 2 nights at La Posada Inn in the center of Winslow.
ROCK ART RANCH
Great place to see rock art. A canyon on the ranch has thousands of petroglyphs. This is a private ranch with lots of history. The owner, Brantley Baird, is a legend.

LA POSADA INN
One of the nicest hotel experiences I have ever had. The Inn was designed by Mary Colter and was Fred Harvey’s last great Railroad Hotel. Beautifully restored, it is filled with interesting historical artifacts as well as the modern art produced by artist Tina Mion who is the wife of the owner. We spent several hours exploring the hotel looking at art, reading the descriptive material, visiting the route 66 museum, and watching informative videos. The Turquoise Room restaurant is one of the best in Arizona.

TINA MION is an American contemporary artist, working in oil paint and pastels. Mion’s work is on permanent display throughout the historic La Posada Hotel. You can also find her paintings in the Plaza Hotel and soon to be open Castaneda Hotel, both located in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Tina has exhibited three times at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. Her work is in collections all over the world, including the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. and the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City, MO. She has given lectures all over the country including the University of Chicago, the Phoenix Art Museum and the L.A. County Art Museum. Her work has been used in university classes on American History and on death and dying. She has been featured on many programs including NPR Morning Edition, Arizona Highways, and American Public Media. A documentary of her work “Tina Mion, behind the Studio Door” by David Hertzberg was an official selection in many film festivals in the United States and Canada from 2012 to 2014.
