Mexico City 2017
Rena and I spent 12 days visiting the Mexico City area in January. We had both been here before but it had been 40 years for me. We visited museums and historical sites. And ate lots of Mexican food, mostly from street stands and small local places. We traveled around via local buses, the metro subway, and Uber. It was the first time using Uber in a foreign country and it worked very well. The exchange rate was about 21 pesos to the dollar, so things were very inexpensive. Our Itinerary was as follows.
Day 1 - Arrived late and took Uber from airport to our hostel near the Alameda Central.
Day 2 - Walked all over seeing the Bellas Artes Theater, the Zocalo and other places downtown.
Day 3 - Took a local bus to the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon at Teotihuacan. Walked around on our own.
Day 4 - Saw world famous Archaeological Museum and Valvadores in front. Also Tamayo Museum.
Day 5 - Moved our base to Coyoacan about 7 miles south. Visited the World Heritage site canals at Xochimileo and walked around San Angel.
Day 6 - Spent Sunday in the center of Coyoacan and enjoyed the markets and festivities. Also visited the Freda Khola Museum
Day 7 - Took a 2 ½ hour bus ride to Taxco, a picturesque silver mining town to the south, where we should stay for 2 nights.
Day 8 - Walked around Taxco. Saw an interesting festival at the central church where locals brought their pets to be blessed by the priest.
Day 9 - Returned to our hostel in Mexico City. Visited the National Palace to see the famous Diego Rivera murals on the staircase. Saw the Folklorico dance performance at Chapultepec Castle.
Day 10 - Visited the University of Mexico and the Modern Art Museum.
Day 11 - Visited Temple Mayor, the pyramid site under the Zocalo, and other museums and attractions.
Day 12- Visited Museo Mural Diego Rivera before flying home.
