Dhaulagiri 1994
In Oct 1994, a group of eight friends attempted to climb Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest mountain in the world at an altitude of 26,795 ft (8,167 meters). Four of us summited while two others were stopped just 300 feet from the top. This gallery documents a slide show that I prepared and presented at many venues after the climb. The objective of the slide show was to describe the geography and people of Nepal in addition to documenting the climb. The climbing photos are annotated and describe how the different camps were set up before summit day.
The photos are grouped into 4 sections.
Part 1 - Mountains of Nepal - Images of Dhaulagiri along with many other beautiful peaks in Nepal.
Part 2 - People of Nepal - A collection of my better portraits and cultural scenes that I took on 8 different treks in Nepal.
Part 3 - Trekking in Nepal - A short summary of trekking.
Part 4 - Dhaulagiri Climb - Annotated photos of the climbing.
I also have a more complete trip report on this site. That report describes the unique 2-person climbing philosophy we used along with details about planning, equipment, and cost. It also explains why not everyone made the summit.
