More Gators 2016
The Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge is one of the best canoe and wildlife destinations in the world. I did a canoe trip there for the 2nd time in Jan 2016. This time I met my cousin Don Coats, who flew down from Pennsylvania. I picked him up at nearby Jacksonville, Florida. We did a 4 day, 3 nights camping trip staying on Chickies, wooden platforms built above the swamp.
January is an excellent time to go. There are minimal mosquitos then and it is not crowded as it is later in the spring. The key is to check the weather forecasts and avoid any winter storms.
We saw an amazing amount of wildlife. On day one, we saw 70 alligators from our canoe. And numerous birds. It is comparable to Africa and I know of no other place in the US where you can have an experience like this.
After we finished the canoe trip, I drove to Fort Lauderdale to meet Rena. She had just finished a 5 day Zumba Cruise. 4,000 people on a boat all dolng Zumba! We spent a day in the Shark Alley section of Everglades National Park, a misnomer as there are no sharks there. This is an amazing place to see birds and gators from the land. We rode a tram that follows a 15-mile loop on a road. We also walked along the road for an hour. The Shark Alley photos are included at the end of this report.
I have another Smugmug photo report called Gators 2013, which I published when Rena and I visited here previously. It has similar photos. But I really enjoyed photographing the gators and wanted to share more.
